Discarded Peanut Shells – So, what’d I miss?

  1. The Nats bucked the cheap tag and signed both Josh Smoker and Jack McGeary, making waves and others to stand up and take notice, particularly of the attire of Jack McGeary. (awesome Bog posts, I must say. Have a great vacation, Steinberg!)
  2. Dmitri Young’s son (Damage) stole the show from his dad
  3. Dmitri Young was everywhere I looked while gone (MLB Bloopers DVD on flight back) and when returning
  4. MLB Bloopers video also featured a “little league home run” by Nook Logan and Brad Wilkerson walking around the national mall asking passersby where RFK is while looking at a tourist map. Very cute!
  5. Ryan Church was incredibly popular at ESPN Zone. Probably due to my massive marketing effort (by actually posting about it ahead of time) ;-) Still bummed I missed that. I wonder if he would have written a personalized line on my ball (had I brought one)?
  6. Nick Johnson is really for real out for the rest of the season, but this time he’ll for real be ready by spring training 2008. Poor guy – good luck with the surgery!
  7. Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen is still creepy. I guess I should be thankful he only threw chewed gum at me and gave me that creepy stare forever when I was in the photog pit next to the visitors’ dugout on Mother’s Day. (Mental note: Don’t mouth the words to the PA music in case allegedly unstable opposing players are watching you)
  8. Ryan Langerhans, who I was really happy we picked up way back when, has been designated for assignment, which I have to admit I’m happy with. Call me fickle. Ok, c’mon – even he knows he hasn’t performed up to his potential (oooh doesn’t that sound like a teacher’s comment on a report card?)
  9. Do I even need to type it? You all knew it was going to happen one day. He’s toolsy, he’s a former Red, and he’s an outfielder. His initials make me think “Windows Media Player”. No, not Adam Dunn (that would be Active Directory – weird Microsoft associations since I’m a Unix chick)
  10. Matt Chico was optioned to Columbus. My first reaction was “Awww!” even though he was at the top of my mental list of pitchers likely to be sent down during a recent commenter survey over at Nationals Journal. I didn’t actually comment because it felt mean to suggest a guy who worked so hard all year be sent down. I love the guy and admire his durability in his rookie career, but.. well, but… yeah. Hopefully he’ll get some good tweaks in working with St. Claire and watching video before making his minor league starts and returning when rosters expand.
  11. Kearns is moving to CF and the ESPNZone Most Popular Player, Ryan Church, remains the starter in left. Yay! Wily Mo Pena will play in RF. Or maybe there will be a platoon? I’m so confused.
  12. There will be public docks at the riverfront park across from the new stadium! Awesome. Unfortunately, they probably won’t be ready until the 2010 season if I’m reading that site right (finished fall 2009?)

Did I get everything?

No, you also missed Abe bobblehead night! About the only good thing that happened during the Mets series!

You missed that it probably should have been Bascik who was optioned, not Chico
