Real Women, Real Baseball

Posted on May 14, 2009 at 10:58 am

A little over a year ago, I met Jennifer Hammond during the “Inaugural Ball Walk“. Jennifer is a baseball player and also in charge of marketing/publicity for the Eastern Women’s Baseball Conference (EWBC). As I mentioned back then, I’d love to play, but sadly still haven’t been able to find a way to fit it into my chaotic life (wow, that post was two years ago!).

Next weekend, May 23-25, the EWBC will be hosting the Fourth Annual Baltimore-Washington Invitational Diamond Classic featuring teams from New England, New York/New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Chicago, and Indiana, as well as their own D.C. Thunder. Preliminary round action will be held Saturday and Sunday at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie and Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover. The Championship game will be held at Joe Cannon Stadium, Monday, May 25 at 10:00 AM.

I am so totally going to try to go and photograph some of the Diamond Classic (and dream about playing again). Hopefully some readers will also take the opportunity!

Complete press release and schedule after the jump.

On May 23 to 25 the Eastern Women’s Baseball Conference will be hosting the Fourth Annual Baltimore-Washington Invitational Diamond Classic.

This year’s tournament will featuring teams from New England, New York/New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Chicago, and Indiana, as well as our own D.C. Thunder.

Games will be played at both Bachman’s Sports Complex in Glen Burnie and Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover. Preliminary round action will be held at both sites on Saturday and Sunday. The Championship game will be held at Joe Cannon Stadium, Monday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m.

Sunday evening will feature a skills competition allowing players to display their speed, power, and accuracy in base running, throwing and hitting. The competition will be followed by dinner catered by a local company. A number of baseball vendors will be on site Sunday evening to demonstrate some of the latest baseball gear and equipment. In addition, Jennifer Ring, author of Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don’t Play Baseball, will be on hand Sunday to answer questions and sign copies of her book.

For nearly 20 years the Eastern Women’s Baseball Conference has provided opportunities for women and girls to play baseball. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the EWBC works hard every year to fulfill its mission of preparing women and girls for regional, national and international competition. The over 100 players on EWBC rosters this season come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Their play represents the twin values of sportsmanship and athletics that helps build strong women and strong leaders.

We hope you will take this opportunity to join us at this year’s Diamond Classic so that we can showcase to others, in the spirit of competition, all that baseball and this region has to offer.

On behalf of the players and coaches of the EWBC, we would like to thank you for your time and support. Any questions can be directed to: Jennifer Hammond, Baltimore Washington Diamond Classic Tournament Committee, jenniferrhammond@gmail.com; JoAnn Milliken, EWBC League President, hittheball@att.net; or Bonnie Hoffman, Tournament Chair, bonnie.hoffman@hotmail.com.

Yes, real fans do exist! How to tell us from the phony “fair weather ones” : http://moneyremix.com/what%E2%80%99s-this-player-worth-to-phillies-fans/

  2. Miss Chatter, when all else fails……MVP Baseball on PC! Where you can create yourself as a ballplayer for the Washington Nationals and lead them to a division title. Yeap, I’ve made it really interesting to put together a lineup of good players for the Nationals for the 2010 season. Here’s the line up below: 1. SS Kristen Bell (hey, she blonde and really, really hot!), 2. RF Jason Mraz (Well, he deserves a World Series ring even though he should have won a Grammy for that “I’m Yours” song for 2008 [darn it John Mayer!], 3.1B Stephen Decambre (dpopie-hey, I like scooping up those balls toward me like Ryan Howard), 4. 3B Mya Mia Harrison (sorry, Ryan Zimmerman needs to re-examine himself before he can rejoin the team. Plus, apart from run-ins with 50 Cent, her love is like whoa!!), 5.LF Ida Maria (yeap, we recruited her because she is from Norway and is a really good punk-rocker with a Bjork-ish style to her music. Plus, she reminds me of new Yankee great Nick Swisher!), 6. 2B Regina Spektor (Yeah, she’s from Russia and was born in the same year I was born with Kristen Bell – 1980!! Plus she has a Chase Utley batting style, down from a Barry Bonds swing.) 7. Catcher Amy Adams (hey, she’s an Italian born, smarty red-head that bats left and plays like Jason Varitek of the Red Sox.), 8. CF K.T. Turnstall (I picked her because she is from Scotland and resembles a lot like Jim Edmonds [former Cardinals 2006 WS Champ great!]) 9. P. Art Alexikas (Sure, I admire his finesse on the mound. This righty has a 1979-born wifey and almost resembles Chad Kroeger of Nickleback. Art brings the heat like Roger ‘Rocket’ Clemens and plays with pressure like Pedro Martinez.)

  3. Good points in your write-up, you have a fun website here. Thanks for the ideas.
