[Olympics] This woman rocks!
February 15, 2006
Last night was the first night I watched the Olympics so far. Although, judging from The Daily Show, the opening ceremonies were quite the sight (Click Five Ring Circus – 2nd row 2nd video)! I just kept forgetting (24!) to watch until last night after I caught up with my DVR’d Desperate Housewives.
I saw Johnny Weir’s interview and short program skate. He’s more of a princess than I am! I don’t know how he can claim he isn’t a “diva”. Beautiful eyes, though. Anyway, after that we turned to the 500m women’s speed skating. I was thinking blah. Don’t get me wrong, I do find speed skating mildly interesting, mainly because when I was a kid, my grandfather had a poster of Eric Heiden and his sister, Beth, on the wall in his basement (and said he had met him or knew his father or something), which I found inspiring. Hey, I just read he became a cyclist too!
As the 2nd pair lined up, the announcers went on about how the Russian, Svetlana Zhurova, was a mother. I perked up – cool! A woman who has given birth, raised a child to toddler, and is still an athlete and competing in the Olympics a mere two years later! She also smoked the competition! Now, that is inspiring!
