Spring Training
February 17, 2006
Yeah! According to a post over at NatFanatics, spring training games will be broadcast over the radio.
Here is the schedule for the 2006 Washington Nationals Spring Training radio broadcasts – as always, games subject to change.
1:05pm — Thursday March 2 PITTSBURGH
1:10pm — Saturday March 4 at New York Mets
1:05pm — Sunday March 5 BALTIMORE
1:05pm — Friday March 10 at Houston
1:05pm — Saturday March 11 LOS ANGELES Dodgers
1:05pm — Sunday March 12 at Florida
1:05pm — Friday March 17 at Baltimore
1:05pm — Saturday March 18 NEW YORK METS
1:05pm — Sunday March 19 at Los Angeles Dodgers
1:05pm — Thursday March 23 BALTIMORE
7:05pm — Friday March 24 at Atlanta
1:05pm — Saturday March 25 at Detroit
1:05pm — Sunday March 26 HOUSTONExhibition:
7:05pm — Friday March 31 BALTIMORE at RFK Stadium
4:35pm — Saturday April 1 at Baltimore (Camden Yards)As it stands now all broadcasts will be heard on WTWP AM & FM 1500/107.7. XM Satellite Radio has been instructed to “Carry All & Cover None”, meaning you’ll hear the entire broadcast, local commercials and all this year, instead of the pregame & postgame being dropped or upcut. (Thanks to my buddy & fellow producer Carlos Diaz at XM for handling all but a handful of Nationals broadcasts at that end last year. He’s a silent partner in making sure what we did at the Nats radio network got on and sounded good for satrad fans.)
We are planning to start at the top or bottom of each previous half-hour based on the scheduled first pitch. So instead of starting at 6:40 for a 7:05 game, this year the tentative plan is to start the pregame at 6:30 for a 7:05 first pitch.
More to come on a possible, much needed, much requested Nationals Postgame call-in show, in the next few weeks.
I’m going to have to sneak my son’s little radio to work so I can listen!

Since you mentioned the radio, what is the TV situation for the regular season?? Darling left to go the Mets and Proctor was canned. Do we have a play by play announcer and a color guy? I haven’t seen anything about this. I certainly wish we could get an owner soon so Traveras and Bowden would get the boot.

No idea on TV at this point. The last blurb I saw about it was at the bottom of the new radio announcer article on MLB in January that basically said it’s all up in the air.
Although a Post article the same day, IIRC, said he was fired.

What does IIRC mean?

“If I remember correctly” :-) (not a common occurrence!)

Mel Proctor was a good play by play guy and he has lots of experience with the Orioles and the Padres. He came to DC last year on a moment’s notice from his home in sunny San Diego, which should count for something. That’s like moving from heaven to hell. I doubt he is demanding big bucks. I can’t imagine why they would not want him back. It isn’t like the Nationals have Vin Scully waiting in the wings.

I agree, Phil. Mel should be brought back.
