A lack of elevation
August 19, 2006
Baseball on the barn was a smashing success, however a success not mirrored by the Nationals, unfortunately. The first inning went well enough, but the 2nd… well… Ramon Ortiz, my heart broke for you. Ramon had no control at all, allowing eight runs in that inning and plunking two batters (apparently completely unintentionally) and ended his outing by being ejected by the umpire and nearly getting a whooping by Chase Utley. I could only imagine how awful he must have felt walking off the field, despite the fact that I knew he had to come out, just maybe not in that manner.
Did you try the brisket? Would you like some more? There are a ton of leftovers! From now on I’m ordering pizzas and it’s BYOB :-) That’ll make it more fun for me to just chill and hang out! Thanks to everyone who came out and we still cheered really loudly for the two runs (it was historic! Soriano’s 40th!). In fact, we cheered for every guy who got on base and ughed and cringed in unision at the wild pitches (from nearly every pitcher).
By the time the game ended, twenty-two of us sweated and swatted mosquitoes behind the barn, while topics of conversation strayed to other sports and looking ahead to the winter.

Nick Johnson hit a fly ball (caught) and the announcers (who apparently had just come to the surprising realization they were in Philadelphia) proclaimed, “the only thing keeping that ball in here is a lack of elevation!” I’d say not much was elevated as the Nationals lost 11-2 in a blowout that featured many bench players by the time the night was through, including Marlon Anderson manning first base and Damian Jackson at short.
Bang Zoom! Go the fireworks!! At least we were entertained by that portion of the show. Neighbors having a party down the street set off some pretty impressive fireworks before the game was over. At least for a moment we could pretend there were some fireworks coming out of the visitors dugout.
Next (and last this season!) barn date: September 23rd!

Blythe and I had a blast, game not withstanding. Then again, we couldn’t expect you to change the outcome of the game just to make the event more fun.
…or
…can we?

I wish I had the power! It was great to finally meet you guys in person.

I don’t know if I’ll make it to the last Baseball on the Barn, but if I do, I know I’d enjoy the company. The pizza would be a bonus–as all the goodies have been to this point.
But could I ask for your recipe for the barbecued shrimp? I may have to crank up my George Foreman grill, or something.

Sure – love my shrimps on the barbie :-) I get tail on (but peeled) shrimp and lay them out on a strip of aluminum foil. Melt a half stick of butter in the microwave and then stir in Old Bay til it’s a little thick. Brush on the shrimp with a basting brush (unless you don’t have one, like I don’t since my dog ate it) or spoon over each shrimp and grill, turning over periodically til done. Last night they weren’t as good as I usually make them because the shrimp were precooked. It’s much better when you start with raw shrimp.

Thanks again! That was so much fun.
