Robert Fick – Future Announcer?
June 27, 2007
Robert Fick returned from his family and attending to his mother’s funeral in California last night, but wasn’t activated from the bereavement list until after the game, so spent some time in both the radio and television broadcast booths. I missed the radio one (darn! I didn’t know he was going to be there), but caught his full tv time and thought he was great! I have to say, I was rather impressed. While he was the most mellow I’ve ever seen, despite claiming to be in good spirits, he did throw out some subtle yet funny punch lines.
Ray King and Dmitri Young bring a lot of lightness and heaviness to the clubhouse. [deadpan]
It took a second for that line to sink in and then I busted up laughing!
Say what you will about him, but I’ve always liked Fick. Mr. Chatter may have figured out why – he’s a lot like my baby brother. Either bouncing off the walls in a rather hyper out of control way or smiling and watching making you not quite sure what’s going on in his head. Apparently he can control himself when required, because he was cool as a cucumber in the booth.
The weirdest line of the interview did not come out of Fick’s mouth…
“So, when will you be ready to strap it on and return to play?”
Ehhhh??? That just didn’t sound right! Fick laughed and said he’s ready now! However, a roster move was necessary to reactivate him and the move wasn’t made before the game. Brandon Watson was sent down to AAA after the game so Fick will be back today. I thought when D’Angelo Jiminez was sent to pinch hit as the last batter of the game that he was getting one last shot to remain on the roster and would be the one to go down, but I guessed wrong. Manny Acta explained that with Guzman out and Belliard playing every day, they need all their infielders. So there you have it.
I didn’t realize there were more baseball men in his family. His brother Chuck (possibly also this guy) is a scout for St. Louis and a nephew was drafted in the 15th round by the Cardinals. I’m assuming that’s also “Chuck“, his brother’s son.

So welcome back, Robert (or Rob or Bob as I heard you referred to during the press booth time)! Good to see you back and glad you got so much support from your family, team, and management. Consider that booth career in the future, k?
