No Games til Thursday

Date October 9, 2007

Aside from interleague play, I typically don’t pay much attention to the American League, so last night’s Indians/Yankees game was the first “All American” game I watched all season. So much so that I didn’t think much when Mr. Chatter told me the pitcher had been hit by a pitch to load the bases until I started writing down things to remember. “Hey, how could the pitcher be hit by a pitch? He doesn’t bat in this game!” It was the excessive predictions of bunting by the announcers that threw him off. So having the National League and specifically the Nationals as my only point of reference, here are things I noted:

  • A-Rod sports #13 like Robert Fick
  • The Indians Asdrubal Cabrera is also #13. I guess that number isn’t very taboo or thought of as bad luck. Or maybe Cabrera was wearing his mother’s pearls as good luck to counteract his jersey number? (Seriously, was that really a string of pearls??)
  • Mussina’s windup involves kissing his toes like a former National – was it Eischen who did that? Makes it look like he’s about to heave before standing to throw the pitch.
  • Jorge Posada’s batting helmet looked more like a combat helmet.
  • Torre doesn’t wear his hat correctly. Or his head is misshapen. Not sure which.
  • Umpire Bruce Froemming made a very incorrect “no swing” call from third base, which made me think of the Dave/Barry chat yesterday wondering if he’s really up to umping home plate for the World Series.
  • I noted a URL on the backboard behind the batter’s box showing the Yankees have a Spanish version of their site at www.yankeesbeisbol.com. So I wondered, do the Nationals? Not with a similar URL. Hmm… apparently they don’t at all. If you click Espanol on their page, it takes you to the MLB page in Spanish, but selecting the Nationals team brings you back to the English site and they aren’t listed under the Mas Equipos en Espanol drop box. Interesting.
  • Trailers for “30 Days of Night” movie use Muse as their background music. That does not look like a movie I’ll rush out and see, though!
  • That Geico commercial with the Chatty Cathy doll might be the best one yet. ;-) (my nickname growing up, although after hearing what the doll was like, I swore I was nothing like it)

Congrats to the Indians, who also partook of a Bud Light and Champagne shower during their postgame celebration. Now maybe I can focus on my book the next two nights!
