Singing the Star Spangled Banner

As the weather has turned to gray, rainy, and cold, here’s a flashback to September 22, 2007; the 2nd to last (home) game of the Nationals’ season. My mom has often asked me when I’m going to sing the National Anthem at a Nats game, and my reply is always the same, “Are you kidding?!” I’ve sung my fair share in front of people in my life, but never in front of 20,000+. I don’t think my nerves could handle it. Although, I recently discovered the option on my MLB Mastercard Extra Rewards program. Haha! So meet Sam Waters, the winner of the Anthem Idol competition the Nationals held earlier last season. When I read the article about the contest saying his name and that he was from Falls Church, I immediately wondered if he was the son of neighbor and whipped off an email with the odd question. Sure enough, he is and they couldn’t have been prouder! So I made sure to get back from the sailing regatta held that day for my lighthouse in time to film and photograph his family’s experience before and during his excellent performance (despite being self-conscious about my wet pants since I had changed before taking the boat out of the water where I promptly fell in trying). Kudos to Sam for the lack of nerves and the pitch perfect performance, and great on scoring some autographs while waiting for the big event! Enjoy…
