DC Sports World Rocked
November 28, 2007
The DC sports world was rocked with the murder of Redskins safety Sean Taylor, who died from his gunshot wounds yesterday morning. I don’t follow football closely and really knew nothing about him prior to the last few days other than hearing his name as a top player for the team. The Redskins nation is mourning in a way that I hope never hits the area again. I didn’t feel qualified to really say anything about it, but his murder did get me reflecting on Florida and pushing past my mostly innocent happy memories of living there.
This I do know… A young mother is now faced with raising their daughter in a way she never imagined - alone. She’ll want to raise their daughter with as normal a life as possible, rehearsing in her head what to say when the time comes to explain what happened to the father the child has no memory of. Thinking she’ll have several years, she’ll try to rehearse little lies until her daughter is old enough to understand because no young child can comprehend murder by gunshots. When the time comes, the explanation will come out nothing like the rehearsals in her head. All the while, she’ll be dealing with her own horrendous memories and feelings of utter loss and confusion.
What happened was tragic and my thoughts are with Sean Taylor’s girlfriend and daughter, family, friends, and teammates and fans most hit by this.
