Sidelines to the Superbowl
January 30, 2008
It appears there is quite a contingent of bloggers covering the Superbowl this week. Dan Steinberg (Washington Post), Chris Mottram, the other Mr. Irrelevant (Sporting News), Will Leitch (Deadspin, Sporting News), With Leather, and probably more I’m not aware of. Leitch also has a post up for the New York Times, which does not seem to be receiving favorable reactions. This comment in particular cracked me up:
Will Leitch is an ignorant woman. If the game and festivities are so irrelevant then why is she there? I’m sure she could have turned down the assignment and someone else who enjoys it could go. I will never purchase the New York Times again.

[insert immature snicker] I wonder if ‘nona’ posted the female bit on purpose or really thinks Will’s a girl? Moving on… So when did the NFL open the Superbowl floodgates to bloggers (not that there’s anything wrong with that)? From what I can guess, each actually had their employer credential them. Interesting. Nice gig if you can get it, eh? I suppose they get paid too! Frankly, as a Superbowl “tourist”, I’m finding the coverage quite amusing and causing me to pay far more attention than I normally would until Sunday. I already knew Steinz was a depressing curmudgeon (see Chicago) at heart. Still, he’s so good at what he does. As another who interviews professional athletes about their facial hair, I feel there’s a bond there. I also learned that I need to open page 289 of God Save the Fan before I read it on the plane next week and see if there’s really a graphic from my buddy two-eight-nine, who also graciously designed the logo for this here unpaid blog nobody pays attention to. See, I feel like I’m on the fringe of the circle of great ones. Kinda like you know, being so close to the Maxim and Penthouse parties and not getting invited. Well, if you actually wanted to get invited. I mean.

Heh. It’s like “Whoa, I know some of these guys!” (in a getting drunk at happy hour kinda way), “and they’re covering the freakin’ superbowl!” Hopefully I can cover the World Series when the Nats get there. I guess I’d have to sell out to some big blog network, though. ;-)
