Nats Park Home Opener Photos
March 31, 2008

Sweeeeeeeeet!!! I’ll post more tomorrow if I have time (post up), but for now, here’s my [Photoset]. Not much there other than the intro festivities and hubbalaboo over President Bush’s arrival and ceremonial first pitch. The only game photos are Odalis Perez pitching and Ryan Zimmerman’s mobbing after his walk-off homerun. I will love him forever for letting us get out of the cold without going into extra innings! I was sitting in section 420 up at the press box level, so I figured any game photos I took wouldn’t be very spectacular. Plus, I wanted a “night off” to just enjoy the game, which I sure did. I did capture a sweet shot of the Capital off in the distance that I’m quite proud of for hand-holding the camera!

That’s a great shot. It may have been cold, but you don’t look like you were in much of a hurry to leave ;-)

I agree about Ryan keeping it from extra innings! And what a dramatic way to win the first game! I was in section 418, we didn’t get that cool Capitol view, it was blocked by a building.

Great shot! You either have very steady hands or a nice lens with vibration reduction (or both). Do you remember what ISO/shutter speed/apeture combo you were using? I’d like to try re-creating the shot you took the next time I catch a night game at the new park.
I took a bunch of pictures of the exhibition game and home opener and uploaded them to Flickr. Here’s the link in case you’d like to see them.

Thanks, Kevin! I was using a 300mm lens at f/5.6 and 1/60 at 1600 ISO (yeah, I know, you’re not supposed to use that high of ISO, but it’s all that really works for me at night with my cruddy equipment). The lens is actually a crappy (cheap!) third party one with no image stabilization/vibration reduction. I’ve just had a lot of practice with it! I’m hoping to get a good lens sometime in the next couple months (saving my pennies).
Great photos! Thanks for sharing!
