Today’s typed lunch
May 19, 2008
I’m not feeling very perky at the moment, so no vlog-lunch today.
Manny Acta, through his impACTA Kids Foundation is currently as I type donating 180 pairs of cleats to DC high school baseball players in need. Reps from 12 local high schools are there accepting the donations on behalf of their teammates. I saw photographers and tv cameras on their way into the stadium, so the event will probably be on the local sports news later today. I’m very impressed with the progress on behalf of local athletes that the impACTA Kids Foundation and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation are making.
Today’s discussion topic: Birds! I generally try to avoid the Screech commentary because you never know what direction it will spin off into. However, while attending Saturday’s Nationals/Orioles game, I observed a dance-off between Screech and the Orioles bird. The contrast in mascots was striking, or maybe the fact that the Nats were getting pounded by the Orioles colored my perception. The Orioles bird looked buff, mature, and intimidating - traits a good mascot should have (although the Philly Phanatic just popped into my head, containing none of those traits. Although, I did say ‘good’ mascot, didn’t I?). Screech, on the other hand, looked belly-licious, bouncy, and childlike. Screech did however possess some wicked dance moves, despite getting shoved and run off the (home) dugout and sent scampering up the stands.
I thought Screech was getting a makeover this season? He flew during the last game last season, leading one to believe he’s maturing into a strong intimidating Eagle that would clobber the Orioles bird. Could that happen someday?
