Nationals Phall to Phillies With Phacial Expressions
May 21, 2008
Yeah, I just couldn’t resist spelling like they do up there in Filadelphia. Sorry about that! [Photoset]

I took a friend to the game last night while Mr. Chatter took the kids to pick up our newly adopted 11 year old dog, courtesy of his mother who is working in Thailand and had to leave “Kitty” behind. Despite the swath of 0s across the line score throughout the duration, the game itself was riveting. I even held my bathroom break until the game was over because I didn’t want to miss it when that one runner finally crossed the plate to break the stalemate! Of course, that didn’t happen until the 9th at which point I was ready to burst. Jason Bergmann pitched seven shutout innings toe-to-toe with Cole Hamels, while the offense had opportunities and couldn’t bring them to fruition (same old song, different verse). Of course, the same could be said for the Phillies until the bitter end of the game.
I couldn’t decide if I wanted to focus on facial expressions during various points of the game or the fact that Jesus Flores did a fantastic job of blocking the plate as Greg Dobbs tried to score on a Shane Victorino double. I had fun comparing my photos to those of the Washington Post and AP both when Guzman stole 2nd in the 1st inning (we all picked pretty much the same shot to display) and when Dobbs was called out at the plate (I like my shot (above) best!).
Kind of a bummer losing it in the end like that, but a good game of baseball overall. You’d think the lack of scoring would have made for a boring game, but it didn’t. Elijah Dukes tried to manufacture the tying run on his own in the bottom of the 9th after taking a walk with two outs. He stole 2nd (more like defensive indifference), and then stole third and was in way before the throw. Pinch hitter Rob Mackowiak also drew a walk, but then Felipe Lopez swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded out to second. Bummer! I was just praying for a wild pitch or something to score Dukes given all the balls just thrown.

excellent photos of Flores blocking the plate. we were down in the RF corner and couldn’t see the play real well, and since we didn’t get a replay…
anyway, nice pics.
