Woman Of The Year 2008

Date June 15, 2008

Chartese Burnett, LLS 2008 Woman of the Year

There are so many “Woman of the Year” titles handed out by various publications and organizations. There’s a business-woman Woman of the Year, People Magazine Woman of the Year, etc. Not many can be as fulfilling as being crowned the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. As Nationals manager Manny Acta likes to remind people, there are so many more important events and issues in the world than the game of baseball. Last night the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held their awards banquet to announce the winners of the Man and Woman Of The Year competition. One of the nominees was Chartese Burnett, VP of Communications for the Washington Nationals Baseball Club. For this night, she was not part of a high profile sports club, but a woman, mother, wife, friend, and cancer survivor on a mission to bring about happy endings. Her story will make you cry even with the happy ending. The thought of buying a voice recorder so your children can hear you after you’re gone is too heartbreaking to bear. Thank goodness she survived! Not only survived, but made it a personal goal to help others affected even in the midst of moving into the new stadium.

She won!! She won!! Congratulations on a well-earned and hard-fought effort from Chartese and her team and supporters. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the campaign. The survival rate of blood cancers, particularly in children, has improved enormously thanks to the research and efforts of the LLS. They also provide wonderful support to families feeling lost and bewildered after a diagnosis. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. The Society’s mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
