For getting a hit in your first at bat last night! I finally picked a National in my newly started “Beat the Streak” and went with the hot bat, worried I’d doom his hot streak or doom the Nats to losing. Ok, maybe I’m a little superstitious. Willie got his hit (and then promptly got himself picked off), and when I fell asleep in the top of the 8th inning with the Nats winning 4-3, I thought maybe I was just being silly with the superstitious thing. Nope, just checked the box score and they lost the game right after I fell asleep.
So I’m going to have to break this superstition thing. I picked a National again, going with Paul Lo Duca. If they lose again, I’m switching back to picking players from our opponents.
Sad News: The Nationals have decided to non-tender closer Chad Cordero after his shoulder surgery according to an article on MLB.com. He could, of course, re-sign with the team when healthy, but still, it’s a little disheartening to read that. Best of luck to you, Chief! [Update:] Brian at NFA has an excellent explanation of the how’s and why’s behind the decision.

Is it really sad news about Cordero? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read all the wonderful things he has done for community, family, etc., and he seems like a great person. But everyone’s love and praise of him as our closer? I never did quite understand that. Personally, he stresses me out a little bit whenever I watch him. I’ve always cheered him on despite my anxiety (I try to cheer for all of our players no matter what I feel for them), but I have never thought he is as great as people seem to think. Of course, I hate to see any of the pieces of my 2005 Original Nationals chipping away, but I just have to be eager for the future.
BTW, don’t feel bad about your “slump.” I feel like all fans are slumping right now, bloggers included.
I agree with RT4 NATS. The sad news about the Chief is that he hasn’t pitched at all this year. I was there the day he was brought in in the 9th, pitched about 3-4 pitches, and then told the dugout he needed to leave.
That was sad.
I think the Nats have done the only reasonable thing there is to do. I do appreciate Brian’s explanation of the implications of player contracts over at NFA.
I dunno, the “Cardiac Closer” thing added little adrenaline and excitement :-) As one of the few remaining original Nats, I do find it a little sad. I totally understand the reasoning behind it, though.
Hmmm I think I discovered the comment posting issue (first time I saw it happening). Hopefully I fixed it.
