As the waiting game continues into extra innings, the past week has been an eye opener to Nats Nation. Not only has ownership shown a desire to go after the best available position Free Agent (IMHO), they have opened up the wallet so far that if Mark Teixeira signs with the Nats, his salary would comprise approximately 27% of the entire 2009 payroll.
I think IF Mark Teixeira doesn’t come to Washington, the Nationals have to make a deal with the San Diego Padres in the form of a trade and get 26 year old Adrian Gonzalez who was a 2008 All Star and Gold Glove for the Padres. The reason he could be “had” from the Padres is their need to shed payroll and an opportunity now exists in light of what has transpired with Jake Peavey and his restricted “no trade” contract. Adrian Gonzalez has 3 years left on his contract and is rated higher in some categories than Teixeira. Many don’t know about Adrian so get his baseball card and look at his numbers. He is a lefty/lefty with power. He had 119 RBIs and 36 HRs in 2008 and played every game for the Padres who lost 99 games. Impressive numbers from a player on a poor team.

The other player to consider is Orlando Hudson at 2nd base who is the #1 Free Agent at 2nd base, and his agent is fielding calls. The ODawg is a Gold Glover and a big upgrade.
