New Mexico to Arizona! Not many pics today as I put in a bunch of miles in order to meet a high school friend and her dad for dinner (no pics and I’ll blame it on friend forgetting her phone, but I also don’t like selfies lately lol).
I got my temporary propane tanks refilled along the way since I’ve been flirting with freezing temps every night along the way (and the van is not winterized, nor do I intend it to be since I use all the systems!). I was afraid of running out in the middle of the night somewhere since there’s no level gauge on these grill tanks. The downside was, I had to remove the tie down and take them out of the tank holder in order to get them refilled – which was kind of a pain. The good news is, they hold nearly three times what the onboard system holds (err held), so cool!
Had a wonderful time with friend and her dad, who gave me a short but entertaining history tour of Prescott and then we had great BBQ for dinner before I skedaddled to find a camp site in the dark. Found some BLM land only 40 minutes away and tucked in for the night.
This is why, as a general rule of thumb, I always try to find a spot before sunset. In the dark, it looked like all the spots were taken until I found this one flat spot next to the road unoccupied. I noticed the hill had a rough road up, but no way I was going to attempt it in my non-4×4 van in the dark (probably could have made it). Walked Riley up the hill in the morning and surveyed the area (and found a good spot where I took the pics from). The the next spot down that I went past because it was occupied was actually on a road with many more open spots down it. Oh well, this was fine for the night. 🙂 This is what BLM camping looks like. Boondocking!
I should make it to San Diego tomorrow unless I find something interesting along the way since I also have Monday as my last vacation day. I booked a camp site at the Salton Sea Beach next week, although it’s two hours from the office in SD, so I’m not sure how well that will work out. My backup plan is the Oceanside Harbor beach parking lot, but I’m going to need to do laundry at some point.
