Escape from the destruction zone! Despite the propane tire mishap, the show must go on! I split two days of wing foiling private instruction off a boat in the Keys with a new friend I’d met through a women’s winging Facebook group. I had just attempted to pick up wing foiling in California, but wasn’t making much progress by the time I left.
I found a KOA on Sugarloaf Key, but I nearly choked at the nightly rate (north of $200 IIRC).
My friend rocked it! By the end of the first day, she was up and winging on foil. Me, on the other hand – I could stand up, but if I started getting on foil, I always fell. I also got surprisingly cold, despite a wetsuit. But what a beautiful setting and having a chase boat without the fear of getting blown to a remote shore was amazing.
Our instructor was a competitive kite surfer in addition to having enough control on the wing to be able to wing to the boat and step onto it. He impressed us during lunch on a sandbar while practicing tricks.
His boat was also impressive – I’d never seen anything like it. It flew across extremely shallow sandbars. I still can’t quite figure out what it was. A “flats” boat?
