I’m pretty sure this was the first time we tried BLM land. I’m also pretty sure it’s the first (but not the last) time we got the van stuck. But first, we stopped in Wendover after crossing out of Utah, where we saw the giant cowboy.
While we passed through the midwest, we stopped for breakfast at a small town diner where the elder locals seemed to be converging as a regular thing. One of them gave us a couple of giant zucchinis he had grown in his garden. We had been carrying them around with us and finally decided to cook them over the fire grate. Not bad!
As for getting stuck, we followed a trail at the end of the campground that was too narrow and rugged for the van. I tried to back out of it, but ended up getting the back wheels up a small embankment behind us, lifting one of the front wheels a few inches off the ground – the drive wheel. At the time, I didn’t know about disabling electronic stability control (the ESC button). We put our welcome mat under the tire, sticks and branches we gathered, we pushed – the van wasn’t budging. We finally asked a couple guys camping nearby if they would help us push and finally got it unstuck. Oops!
