Sure enough, it got cold overnight. I awoke to frost on the windshield, but relief that the coyotes didn’t get us overnight. I needed to dump tanks/refil water and checked my apps for anything between where I was and Marfa, only to discover a state park (with camping!) less than 20 minutes away. I could have camped there with hookups. Oh well. I paid my $11 and did the thing – worth it.
It wasn’t long before I arrived in Marfa. I had heard you could camp in the parking lot of the funky El Cosmico campground, so after grabbing lunch in a local establishment, made my way there. They didn’t charge me and also let me plug in my Goal Zero to recharge.
The campground was mostly super cool old antique campers (as well as yurts, safari tents and other stuff), some painted really cool-funky. The one exception was a very modern looking couple of “cabins”.
I read there was an elevated location to watch for UFOs or strange lights at night. It sounded intriguing, but I had no interest in driving somewhere and staying up half the night to maybe/maybe not see lights that were most certainly not from UFOs. I think the lore is what gives the strange town a mysterious vibe.
