Sunrise over the river – stunning. I was going to head to Marfa, TX (at the recommendation of a real life friend who also happens to have a van), but after driving hundreds of miles, decided not to go that far out of the way in one shot. Then Google maps told me my next choice went from 1.5 hours away to 2.5 hours away, so I ended up at my third choice, Madera Canyon just north of Marfa, so I may as well have just gone all the way there. No cell signal, so thank you Starlink. Another cold night was ahead. Reviews of the site frequently mentioned being freaked out by javelinas (small wild boars, I guess, which I did see on the side of the road on the way there), so I lit up all exterior lights and limited venturing outside the van.
I heard a pack of coyotes howling very nearby all night. Needless to say, Riley got very short pee outings venturing not far from the van. Not another soul was in sight and very little traffic passed on that side road. By morning, there was another car in another picnic spot further down.
